A HOUSE FOR JEAN-LUC GODARD
There is something very fresh about the infuriatingly difficult late films by Godard!
His films always had an irritating lack of fluidity, but the latest, Film Socialism pushed this lack of fluidity to a maximum.
But this very misanthropy, if we can call it so, makes it all the more attractive, actually, at least to those of us with magnificently masochist tendencies.
Yes, Godard's late movies refuse to be consumed!
They refuse to be eaten up at a time when we eat up everything.
Against Devouring! - seems to say Godard!!!!!
He is against us!
Good for him!
He irritates us, in our Anglo-Saxon expectations, he irritates us in our insatiable desire to "clarify" everything.
He is opposing us!
Good for him!
So let's put on the blue uniform (or red...? or green...?) and refuse to attend the party, our "benevolent" party, on the beaches of Cannes, Miami, Palm Springs...!!!!!!!!!!!!
Godard doesn't seem to have illusions. He didn't have them for some time, if ever!
So let's build a Misanthropic House. But a paradoxical house, since his is a socialist misanthropy (if we are to use an oxymoron).
Design a house for someone who doesn't believe in Capitalism, for someone who doesn't believe in our comfortable assumptions, for someone who still dreams "in a different key."
Build a House for Godard, at eighty, sixty, forty, twenty...!!!!!!!!!!!
A House for a Teenager with white hair!
A House for the Rebellious Sixties, but half a century later!
A House with a Little Red Book on the night table, perhaps... (as opposed to the ubiquitous Bible, as in the American motels).
Godard was / is a critic. He was and will always be, a critic.
This might explain the above mentioned lack of fluidity.
Design the House of Paradox!
Design the House of Disjunctions!
Design the House of Marx & Coca-Cola.
Design the House of Jean-Luc Godard.
