A HOUSE FOR A DEFENDANT AND HIS LAWYER
Strange is the human condition…!?
One cannot really know what to expect…
Everything can change in a second, if Fate wants it to.
Now king, next beggar (although the reverse is more difficult).
It has been said that a life can only be judged upon its termination, not a second earlier.
It is probably true.
Did Napoleon, or Cesar, know how they would end…?
And even Pushkin, who did have a premonition of his end, in eerie detail, if we are to consider the story of Onegin (which preceded his own with several years), couldn’t avoid, it seems, its ominous unfolding.
If we look at this picture what do we see…?
A brilliant lawyer and a brilliant man (the defendant).
But why did the brilliant man, on his way to become, as many considered, the next president of France, arrive in the uncomfortable position to need the services of a brilliant lawyer…?
Human frailty, this is the answer.
And human frailty does not avoid anyone, king and beggar alike.
If we look again at the picture we see clearly that the brilliant man is in trouble.
He is “caught.”
The dark side is unmasked, to an extent at least.
And the President of the International Monetary Fund is reduced to the very unflattering position of having to defend himself, from the bench reserved to the accused.
Nothing is changed in the world.
There is something almost biblical in this picture, and in many others issued on this occasion.
The beast within man unmasked. The judge, human or not, waiting to pronounce a verdict. And the lawyer, paid to serve his client, not necessarily truth, in between.
We ask you to imagine A HOUSE FOR A DEFENDANT AND HIS LAWYER.
A house for someone who tries to escape the misery of a human action qualified, or qualifiable, as criminal, and his terrestrial protector, the lawyer. The accused and his mediator / protector.
A house pendulating precariously between justice and its successful avoidance.
