A HOUSE FOR JEFF KOONS
What is a flower…?
And what is a sculpture…?
And what is a sculpture representing a flower…?
We learned that a sculpture of a blue “Balloon-Flower” by Jeff Koons just sold at Christie’s for 21 million dollars.
For this money obviously the flower better lasts… as such, inevitably, it was made of steel.
But two more questions:
What is a balloon…?
And what is a “balloon-flower…?”
An inflated “flower,” obviously, although it is difficult to imagine that some of the most fragile and modest beings on this earth, flowers, can be “inflated,” thus, “balloon- flowers.”
But while a real flower, perishable, though beautiful, sells for a few dollars, at the most, a “balloon-flower,” made of glittering steel, and signed Jeff Koons, sells for millions of dollars.
Such is the “power of art.”
And such is the empty vanity, the balloon-vanity of “art.”
Inflated, Christie’s made quite a lot of money with it.
So did Jeff Koons.
So did the many speculators associated with it in the voracious “art world.”
We ask you to design a House for Jeff Koons.
An inflated house.
A balloon house. Or a puppy house. Or a Mickey Mouse House. Or a “house” masquerading itself into a house. Just as Jeff Koons’ “art” masquerades itself into art. But please notice the fraudulent grimace beneath the happy-go-lucky “general tone.” Give expression, dear architect, to the vulgarity of an opulence that is as irritating as it is empty.
Design a House for Jeff Koons.
Design The House of Inflation, the more the better!
Make sure that if a “balloon-flower” costs 21 million dollars, the “balloon-house” will cost many, many, many times more!
Please do not think of Citizen Cane and his last word: Rosebud…!
Just imagine, dear architect, just imagine…!!!!!!!!!!!!!
