A HOUSE FOR “THE PICTURE OF THE DAY”
Which picture…?
The one showing angry Egyptians protesting against a political “new” regime they do not want, or blasé Germans staying placidly in line for a new gadget from Samsung…?!?
Two hypostases of today’s world.
Two pictures, taken on the very same day: May 28th, 2012.
What to make of them…?
Which picture would make our heart beat faster, with an intensity without which life is not really worth living…?!?
While the Egyptian alternative is problematic and dangerous, we like to think that those angry protesters did not and would not protest in order to arrive at what the other picture depicts…
Could it be that Andrei Codrescu was right when he said that we replaced The Berlin Wall with the Berlin Mall…?!?
Indeed, strangely the words “wall” and “mall” seem to have only one letter that is different, but in actuality it could be seen as the same letter, but in one case upside down…
Could this be the only symbolic difference between the WALL and the MALL…?!?
The WALL represents in Berlin’s case, restriction, separation, divide, in other words, LACK OF FREEDOM.
But is the MALL any different…? Aren’t we subjugated, daily, by its tyranny…?
So of the two pictures, which one is more alive, which one says YES to life more…?!?
We believe it is the first one, showing angry Egyptians fighting for a right to live. And we only hope this right to live will not materialize in the placidity depicted in the second picture, where, under the illusion of “freedom,” we submit, in line, to the empty promises of a new gadget.
So how to live…?
And how to conceive of a house for “the picture of the day?”
We think there are serious reasons here for reflection.
Where do we stand…?
What do we opt for, in this life…?
Should our house be angry, or placid, or what…?
What would a worthy house be like…? What would its values be…? A new protest…? A new gadget…? Would it point towards “the wall” or towards the “mall,” or neither…?
We ask you to envision A HOUSE FOR “THE PICTURE OF THE DAY.”
Maybe a different picture altogether…
We will receive ANY work, ANY size and ANY format that responds to the theme.
Thank you,
