International Competitions in Architecture
A SANDCASTLE
Could there ever be an “avant-garde” sandcastle…?!?
Maybe it would be interesting to organize an event where we would invite some of our most iconoclastic architects and ask them to build a sandcastle… we wonder how a sandcastle by Le Corbusier or Frank Lloyd Wright would have looked like…!?!
Could we imagine an “avant-garde” sandcastle…?!?
Or could it be that the architect, almost by definition, is too serious for such a frivolous activity…?!?
On Cosmos Street inTokyo (what a paradoxical name, since Cosmos means “order” in Greek) some years ago the most “unconventional” architects at the time were invited to build a “folly.”
We wonder, now, how would those very architects build a sandcastle…?!?
Of course, castles are not fashionable any longer… yet, this is what children build, at the beach, with no knowledge at all about architecture…!?!
Sandcastles…
A dream in sand…
Could we do it…?!?
Could we dream in sand in such a way that neither the sea, nor the sky, nor the sand itself, not to speak about our “professional community” would laugh at us…?!?
Could we be child-like yet “serious,” could we be who we are and who, in most cases, we forgot being…?!?
We wonder… how would a sandcastle by Peter Eisenman look like…?!? Or one by Wolf Prix…?!?
Would they still be “wild,” or would they be “wild” in a very different way…?!?
Would they try to provoke or would they just simply try to celebrate summer, water, the vastness of the sky above and their “inner child”…?!?
It is still summer.
We ask you to build a sandcastle.
One that expresses your innermost state of mind / heart.
Forget the theories of architecture, forget the polemics, forget the contract documents, the clients, the competition… just build a sandcastle, on the beach… in a disinterested way, child-like, dreaming… dreaming in sand…
Dust returns to dust.
Our tallest skyscraper one day will be nothing but dust.
No more meaningful, really, than the humblest sandcastle… no more lasting, really…
Build in sand, for a second... and send us a few images… we will be happy to publish them.
Thank you,
