THE HOUSE OF WORTH
What is worth…?
And what is worthy…?
Is it what society teaches us…?
We invite you to reflect on what worth truly is, starting from this very moving poem we discovered accidentally, on Facebook.
It was written by an Egyptian woman.
It is a deeply felt feminism here, legitimized by the strict conditions of her culture.
It is a cry against the violence of a masculinity that ravishes woman and earth alike.
It is a cry against hypocrisy.
It is a cry against paternalism and patriarchal arrogance.
It is A CRY FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Life beyond the hymen.
Life beyond the restrictive guiding marks of the powerful.
Life for the blade of grass, refusing to tremble in the shadow of the big warrior “trees.”
Life for the vulnerable, reclaiming rights often crushed by the kings of this world.
Please read this poem and please imagine a TRUE
HOUSE OF WORTH.
There's Life beyond the Hymen
by Heba Habib
My worth is not a few inches of skin
that I may have never had
My worth is not who I have let in
or who I have kept outside me
My Worth is not the moment of your satisfaction
My Worth is not bleeding enough
to paint the flags of your fake victory
so your like can go out
and conquer more bodies with shame
My Worth is not being your daughter
or his wife
or anyone’s anything
My worth is not restraint to satisfy
your ego & your hypocrisy
My Worth is not waiting for the correct amount of time
My worth is not weighed in your Gold
I will not eat my heart for you
it floats in me
Pale & as light as a feather
Only the sky binds me
Only eyes you cannot know
You who only see the worth
of fists & cages
My Worth is more than anything
you can conceive
you who measure in blood
